THE MAGIC OF MULLEIN
Posted by Ray Cousins on
Mullein (Verbascum thapsus L.) has been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes and at this time each year we experience a large demand for our MULLEIN remedies harvested and prepared from our own herb garden.
Rather than masking discomfort, Mullein's benefits support and maintain multiple body systems including digestive, joints, muscles and overall inflammation.
Mullein is a biennial plant with large velvety leaves and a yellow flower stalk that can grow to 6ft tall or more. It contains impressive plant compounds such as saponins, flavonoids, mucilage and phytonutrients.
- Saponins, have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and antitumor properties
- Flavonoids, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and help maintain cellular wellbeing
- Mucilage coats and soothes tissues
- Phenylpropanoid glycosides have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. These compounds, particularly verbascoside, are considered active ingredients that support mullein's use in traditional remedies for inflammation, skin issues, and respiratory support
- Iridoids have anti-inflammatory properties
- Kaempferol is one of the primary active plant compounds found in mullein's leaves and flowers, along with other flavonoids like quercetin, rutin, apigenin, and luteolin. These compounds are believed to be responsible for many of mullein's traditional medicinal benefits, particularly its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

MULLEIN LEAVES which are in our teas and tinctures, are best harvested in the first year or before the flower stalk appears in the second year. These may be used fresh or dried for tea, however we prefer to dry ours. Leaves in particular strengthen and normalize mucous production. Tinctures are most convenient, concentrated and fast-acting. Mullein is an expectorant, which means it helps the body expel excess mucus by making your coughs more productive.
If drying leaves for smoking we suggest removing the center vein.
MULLEIN FLOWERS are especially effective whenused as an oil infusion for ear aches and infections. See our Ear Treatment Oil.. It is best to harvest as soon as the flowers open and use only the yellow flower. Dogs and cats respond well to this highly effective treatment.
