Leeks or Leaks?
Posted by Ray Cousins on
Today we remember how important the leek is to us, and in Wales they will be celebrating St. David's Day by enjoying the hearty leek. Leeks are worn in remembrance of St. David's guidance in a battle against their common enemy, the Saxons. Supposedly, he instructed the Welsh warriors to wear leeks on their helmets, so that they could be distinguished from their opponents. Today they are worn on the lapel.
Even Shakespeare, in his play Henry V, refers to wearing a leak as an ancient tradition.
